What to Do If You Find a Snake Inside Your Home

Posted on June 10, 2026 By admin

Finding a snake inside your home can be an unsettling experience, but in most situations, there is a simple explanation. Snakes are often attracted to houses in search of food, warmth, water, or shelter. Small openings around doors, windows, vents, or foundations can provide easy access, especially during warmer months when reptiles are more active.

If you discover a snake indoors, the most important thing to do is remain calm. Most snakes prefer to avoid contact with people and will usually look for a way to escape if left undisturbed. Keep a safe distance, and make sure children and pets stay away from the area. If possible, close nearby interior doors to limit the snake’s movement and prevent it from entering other parts of the house.

It is generally best not to attempt to catch, handle, or kill the snake yourself. Even species that are not venomous may bite if they feel threatened, and it can be difficult to correctly identify a snake without proper training. Contacting local animal control or a licensed wildlife removal service is the safest option, as professionals have the equipment and experience needed to remove the animal without causing harm.

After the snake has been safely removed, take some time to inspect your home for possible entry points. Sealing cracks, repairing damaged screens, covering vents, and closing gaps beneath doors can help reduce the chances of future visits. Keeping yards tidy and limiting areas where rodents may gather can also discourage snakes from coming close to your home, helping create a safer and more secure environment.
