If You Notice This Insect in Your Home, Here’s What You Should Do

Posted on October 9, 2025 By admin No Comments on If You Notice This Insect in Your Home, Here’s What You Should Do

A few weeks ago, while mowing the yard on a sunny afternoon, I noticed my golden retriever, Mochi, napping under the big oak tree. Everything felt calm and familiar until I felt a light tickle on my ankle. I brushed it off, expecting a mosquito, but when I looked closer, I froze. A tiny black speck clung to my skin. When I removed it carefully, I saw a single white dot on its back — a lone star tick.

Ticks may be small, but they’re nothing to take lightly. Unlike mosquitoes or flies, they can attach quietly and stay hidden for hours. The lone star tick, common in many warm, grassy regions, is known for being especially active and persistent. It’s a reminder of why checking yourself and your pets after time outdoors is so important.

Female lone star ticks are easy to recognize by the small white mark on their backs. What makes them different from other species is their behavior — instead of waiting on plants for a host to pass by, they actually move toward warmth and motion. This means they can appear in backyards, parks, or wooded trails, especially during warmer months.

To stay safe, wear long sleeves and pants when working in tall grass, use a vet-approved tick preventive on pets, and always shower soon after spending time outdoors. Check your skin, hairline, and clothing carefully. Quick action and awareness are the best ways to prevent bites and protect yourself and your pets. A little extra caution can make all the difference the next time you’re outside enjoying the sunshine.
