Karen opened her mouth to protest, but Officer Rodriguez interjected gently, “We’ll have to file a report, but we urge you to consider the circumstances. Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle in this heat is extremely dangerous.”
The words struck Karen harder than the realization of the broken glass. Her anger began to subside as she glanced towards the treatment room where her son was being cared for. The reality of her mistake started to dawn on her. Her son could have been lost forever—all because of a brief lapse in judgment.
Tears welled in her eyes as she processed the magnitude of what could have happened. Finally, she turned to Lucas, her voice softer, “I’m sorry… I didn’t understand. Thank you for saving my son.”
Lucas, still catching his breath, nodded. “I’m just glad he’s okay.”
