Why Dogs Love Sleeping on Your Clothes

Many dog owners notice an endearing habit — their pets love curling up on clothing, whether it’s a soft shirt, a jacket, or even a pile of laundry. While it might look like a simple quest for comfort, behavior experts say this routine reflects much more than coziness. Your clothes carry your scent, and for dogs, that familiar smell is deeply reassuring. It offers warmth, safety, and a sense of emotional closeness, which is why they often prefer unwashed garments — those pieces hold the strongest reminder of their favorite human.

Beyond affection, this habit can also reveal emotional needs. Dogs that spend long hours alone may lie on clothing as a substitute for your presence. When they’re surrounded by your scent, it feels as though you’re nearby, easing separation anxiety and offering comfort in unfamiliar or stressful moments. On a simpler level, clothing provides the softness and warmth that dogs instinctively seek when resting, making it an ideal place for a nap.

Behaviorists also point out that boredom can influence this pattern. A dog with less stimulation or limited social interaction might naturally drift toward what feels comforting and familiar. For dogs who have faced anxiety or unstable pasts, the scent of their owner can be especially grounding — a way to self-soothe and feel secure.

Experts agree that this behavior is harmless and, in fact, heartwarming — unless it turns destructive through chewing or tearing. Most of the time, it’s a pure expression of love and loyalty. So, the next time your dog curls up on your favorite sweater, take it as the gentle compliment it is: a quiet sign that your scent, your presence, and your bond bring them peace.
