Southern California Shaken Awake: What We Know About Monday’s San Diego Earthquake

Posted on December 26, 2025 By admin No Comments on Southern California Shaken Awake: What We Know About Monday’s San Diego Earthquake

Southern California residents were jolted into alert mode Monday morning when a strong earthquake rippled across the region, shaking buildings and rattling nerves from San Diego to Los Angeles. The quake struck shortly after 10 a.m. PT, with early estimates placing its magnitude between the mid-5 range and the upper-6s. Centered just a few miles south of Julian, the shaking was strong enough to set off alarms, sway structures, and prompt people across multiple counties to seek cover.

Emergency notifications quickly circulated, reminding residents to follow the familiar safety steps of dropping, covering, and holding on. In the hours that followed, seismologists recorded a series of aftershocks—at least seven in total—with the strongest measuring just under magnitude 4. Despite the intensity of the initial jolt, officials reported no serious injuries, and early assessments suggested that damage was largely minimal.

There were, however, some visible reminders of the quake’s force. Rockslides temporarily disrupted travel along State Route 76, and a handful of businesses reported minor issues such as fallen items and brief interruptions. State and local leaders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, said they were closely monitoring conditions, with emergency teams prepared to respond if needed. San Diego State University confirmed its campus was unaffected, allowing classes and operations to continue without disruption.

Transportation agencies also moved quickly as a precaution. Metrolink paused train service between Oceanside and San Clemente to inspect tracks before resuming normal operations. Residents have been advised to stay alert for possible additional aftershocks and to review earthquake safety plans. While the tremor caused widespread concern, the limited damage and swift response underscored the region’s preparedness—offering a timely reminder that in earthquake country, readiness can make all the difference.
