Onion and Cloves Overnight — The Truth Behind This Classic Cold-Season Tradition

For decades, households have passed down an unusual yet memorable cold-season ritual: placing a peeled onion studded with whole cloves near the bed overnight. While it may sound like folklore, many families associate the practice with comfort during bouts of sniffles and congestion. Though it isn’t a medical cure, the tradition blends history, sensory experience, and a touch of psychology — all of which help explain why it has endured through generations.

Preparing it is straightforward. Simply peel a fresh onion, press about six to twelve whole cloves into its surface, and set it on a plate in the bedroom or resting area for several hours, ideally overnight. Earlier beliefs suggested the mixture could “draw out” germs, reduce stuffiness, promote better sleep, and freshen the room. Modern understanding paints a different picture: onions contain sulfur-based compounds and antioxidants, while cloves are known for eugenol, a substance recognized for mild antimicrobial qualities. Still, these properties don’t translate into removing viruses from the air or treating illness directly.

What people often notice instead are the sensory effects. The strong yet warming aroma may help the nose feel clearer, and the onion can release a bit of moisture that subtly reduces dryness in the air. Together, the scents can also help mask lingering odors in a sickroom, creating an environment that feels cleaner and more soothing. Just as importantly, rituals themselves can foster emotional reassurance — a reminder that someone is taking steps to create comfort during an otherwise uncomfortable time.

If you decide to try this tradition, keep it simple and hygienic: use a fresh onion, place it on a clean dish, discard it after about 24 hours, and wash your hands once you’ve handled it. For more noticeable relief, warm steam from simmering ingredients like onion, garlic, cloves, and ginger may help loosen congestion. Ultimately, the onion-and-clove practice is best viewed as a comforting custom rather than a treatment — a small gesture that can make cold nights feel a bit more manageable while you focus on rest and recovery.
