Emily, a 17-year-old senior, was excited for prom. She had saved up for a violet dress, booked a salon appointment, and wanted the evening to be magical in honor of her late mother, whose favorite color was violet. But when she arrived at the salon, she discovered her appointment had been mysteriously canceled. To her shock, her stepmother Carla was already there, using the time slot for herself. Heartbroken, Emily went home and tried to fix her hair on her own, unsure if she even wanted to attend prom anymore.
