Evelyn’s eyes were misty, her façade cracking. “I know. I’m just… I’m sorry. I have a lot to learn.”

Michael: “It wasn’t about losing me. It was about gaining Sophie.”

Evelyn nodded, tears spilling over. “I was wrong. I love her. I just didn’t know how to show it.”

We sat in silence, the night enveloping us, a tentative understanding unfolding. Forgiveness wouldn’t come easy, not after seeing Sophie’s tears and hearing her hurt. It would take time and effort to rebuild what had been broken.

As Evelyn left that night, she paused by Sophie’s room, watching her sleep. She whispered an apology, a promise to change, to be better. Michael and I knew it was a start, albeit a small one. But for Sophie, for us, we hoped it would be enough to mend the fractures and build a stronger, more inclusive family.
