Watkins Inc., one of McCormick’s rivals, has raised its concerns publicly, arguing that the updated packaging may lead customers to assume they’re purchasing more product than is actually inside.

McCormick maintains that its labeling is accurate and fully compliant with federal requirements. The companies’ contrasting packaging styles play a central role in the debate. McCormick continues to use its classic opaque tins, which conceal the product but preserve the brand’s recognizable look. Watkins, in comparison, packages its spices in smaller, transparent containers that allow buyers to see the contents directly before purchasing.

Watkins argues that these visual differences may cause confusion for shoppers trying to compare quantities between brands. McCormick counters that clear net-weight information printed on each tin provides customers with everything they need to make an informed choice. As the conversation has grown, it has prompted broader questions about packaging practices across the spice industry, with some consumers stating that container size can be misleading even when the printed weight is correct.

Multiple legal complaints have been filed, and related cases remain under federal review without any final decisions yet. Regardless of the outcome, the controversy highlights the importance of transparency and straightforward communication in consumer packaging. In a competitive market where trust is crucial, brands continue to face pressure to ensure that their labeling is both honest and easy for shoppers to understand.
