How a Simple Kitchen Staple Can Help Keep Your Car Dry and Fresh

f you’ve ever stepped into your car and been greeted by foggy windows or a musty, damp smell, you’re definitely not alone—especially if your vehicle has a few years behind it. Moisture buildup is a common issue in older cars, and it can make driving uncomfortable while encouraging odors to linger. Fortunately, one of the easiest and most effective solutions might already be sitting in your pantry.

Plain table salt is a surprisingly powerful tool for reducing humidity inside your car. Because salt is naturally hygroscopic, it draws moisture from the air and traps it. Placing a small container of salt inside your vehicle can help lower humidity levels, reduce window fog, and prevent that stale scent that comes from trapped dampness. It’s simple, natural, and wonderfully low-cost.

Using this method couldn’t be easier. Fill a bowl, jar, or even an old sock with dry salt, then place it on the dashboard, under a seat, or in a cup holder. Over time, the salt will start to clump together—your cue that it has absorbed moisture and needs to be replaced. No gadgets, chemicals, or ongoing maintenance required.

By controlling moisture, you also reduce the risk of mold and mildew, which are the main culprits behind unpleasant odors and can bother those with allergies or sensitivities. This small trick is especially useful for cars parked outdoors, used infrequently, or showing signs of aging seals that let extra moisture in. A simple handful of salt can help protect your interior, improve air quality, and make every drive a little more comfortable. Sometimes the most effective solutions really are the simplest.
