An infinity pool is also referred to as a pool with a negative edge, zero edge or vanishing edge. It is a pool where water flows on more than one edge. The pool water creates waves and creates a visual effect of unlimited water.

When the pool is built, the pool's edge ends at a weir 1/16 to 1/4 inches below the actual pool level. Now, beneath the weir, a trough is being built to help create waves in the basin. The wave effect occurs when water enters the catch basin and is pumped back into the pool. These pools have the effect that the pool has no edge and extends to the horizon. The illusionary effect is so real that it feels like water is actually falling into the ocean or the bay.
