Hidden Risks Beneath the Surface: When Alternative Therapy Goes Too Far

Posted on March 25, 2026 By admin

A routine medical scan in South Korea led to an unexpected and unsettling discovery. A 65-year-old woman, seeking answers for persistent knee pain, learned that her joint tissue contained hundreds of tiny gold needles. What had long been dismissed as typical discomfort from osteoarthritis—a condition marked by stiffness, swelling, and gradual cartilage wear—turned out to involve something far more unusual beneath the surface.

Like many patients coping with chronic pain, she had already explored standard treatments such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications, only to find limited relief and unwanted side effects. In search of alternatives, she turned to acupuncture, a widely practiced therapy designed to ease discomfort by stimulating specific points on the body. While acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed correctly, variations in technique and long-term approaches can introduce unexpected complications.

In this instance, the needles had been deliberately left inside the body as part of a prolonged treatment method believed by some to provide continuous stimulation. While this practice exists in certain alternative medicine circles, it is not broadly supported by mainstream medical standards. Over time, the accumulation of foreign objects within tissue can create new health concerns, particularly when they go unnoticed for years.

Medical experts caution that the body may respond unpredictably to retained materials. Inflammation, localized damage, and infection are all possible outcomes, and such objects can also complicate diagnostic imaging by obscuring clear results. Cases like this serve as a reminder that even well-known therapies should be approached with informed guidance, balancing traditional practices with modern medical understanding to ensure long-term safety.
