I glanced at Marsa, who was now purring softly, her eyes half-closed in contentment. My heart sank. Could it really be that Marsa had somehow found these puppies and brought them home?
Mrs. Miller cleared her throat, her disapproval evident. “I saw your cat coming and going with those little ones. Thought it was strange, so I called it in.”
I felt a mixture of embarrassment and disbelief. “I assure you, officer, I had no idea she was doing this. I thought she was just wandering around like she usually does.”
The officer nodded, a gentle look in his eyes. “I believe you, ma’am. Cats have strong maternal instincts. It’s not unusual for them to adopt other animals, especially when they sense they’re in need.”
