My Nana’s Simple Trick Cleans a Greasy Oven Filter in Minutes — No Scrubbing Needed

Posted on October 17, 2025 By admin

Cleaning a greasy oven hood filter can feel like one of those dreaded kitchen chores, but my Nana’s clever trick makes it effortless — no scrubbing, no chemicals, just a little science and patience. Over time, filters collect grease that blocks airflow, traps odors, and can even become a fire hazard. Regular cleaning not only keeps your kitchen smelling fresh but also ensures your range hood runs efficiently.

Nana’s method uses two simple ingredients: boiling water and baking soda. Fill a large pot or deep basin with rolling-hot water and slowly stir in ¼–½ cup of baking soda. Using tongs or gloves, submerge the filter completely, letting it soak for 10–15 minutes. You’ll see grease lift away and float to the surface like magic. Rinse it under warm water, and if needed, give it a light scrub before leaving it to air-dry.

The secret lies in chemistry. The heat melts the grease, while baking soda’s mild alkalinity breaks down stubborn buildup naturally. It’s a safe, eco-friendly alternative to store-bought degreasers, leaving your kitchen cleaner without harsh fumes or residue. For extra power, add a splash of vinegar or a drop of gentle dish soap before soaking.

To keep things simple, repeat this routine every two to three months. You’ll prevent clogs, improve ventilation, and avoid bigger clean-ups later. It’s inexpensive, effective, and satisfying — proof that sometimes the best solutions really do come from Grandma’s wisdom.
