Feeling lost and humiliated, I decided that I needed to take a step back and reevaluate the situation. It was a sleepless night when a thought occurred to me: if I couldn’t find acceptance and comfort in their home, I would create it for myself, on my own terms.

The next morning, I rose early and went for a walk. It was time to reclaim my independence, but I had to be smart about it. I needed a plan. As I strolled through the neighborhood, I stumbled upon a small community center. A oster on the bulletin board caught my eye “Volunteers Needed for After-School Program.”
