I had always loved children, and I had experience from raising David. It was perfect. I signed up immediately, eager to regain a sense of purpose and contribute to the community in my own way.

Volunteering transformed me. Each day I spent with the children was a reminder of my resilience and ability to make a difference. I taught them crafts, helped with homework, and organized small events. The children’s laughter and gratitude were the balm my heart needed.

The more time I spent at the community center, the more I felt my old self returning. I was no longer simply “David’s mom” or “Melissa’s burden.” I was Bertha—the woman who could adapt, who could give, who could inspire.
