Sarah looked up from washing the dishes, thinking the sound of running water had distorted

The accusation hung in the air, a heavy cloud of distrust and insecurity. Sarah frowned, her heart aching at the thought that John had allowed this seed of doubt to grow unchecked. “John, genetics are unpredictable. Tim has your smile, your stubborn curly hair. He might have my eyes, but he’s your son. You’ve been there every step of the way. I can’t believe you’d give any weight to idle comments from outsiders.”

Despite her words, a sliver of fear wound its way into her mind. What if this was about something deeper? A symptom of a larger issue in their marriage that she hadn’t noticed?

“Sarah, I just need to know,” John said, his tone softening slightly, yet his resolve remained clear. “I need to put this to rest, one way or the other. It’s eating me up inside.”
