Silverfish are among the oldest insects still living today, with origins dating back long before the age of dinosaurs. Although small and harmless to people physically, these fast-moving insects can become a frustrating household problem when they begin feeding on everyday materials inside the home. Silverfish are especially drawn to dark, damp environments such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens, laundry rooms, and storage areas where moisture levels remain consistently high.
Unlike biting insects, silverfish do not sting or spread disease directly, but they can damage personal belongings over time. They feed on materials rich in starches and carbohydrates, including paper, cardboard, glue, wallpaper, fabrics, and even certain food products. Homeowners may notice small holes, yellowish stains, shredded paper edges, or damage to books, photographs, clothing, and stored boxes. Because silverfish are nocturnal and move quickly, many people do not realize they have an infestation until visible damage begins appearing.
One of the most effective ways to reduce silverfish activity is by controlling moisture inside the home. Dehumidifiers, improved ventilation, fans, and repairing leaks can make living spaces far less attractive to them. Decluttering storage areas, removing stacks of paper or cardboard, and sealing pantry foods in airtight containers also help eliminate hiding places and food sources. A dry and organized environment makes it much harder for silverfish populations to survive and spread.
Some homeowners also use natural deterrents and pest-control methods to reduce infestations. Substances such as diatomaceous earth or boric acid are commonly used in cracks and hidden corners where silverfish travel, while scents like cedar or lavender may help discourage them from settling in certain areas. Sealing gaps around baseboards, walls, and storage spaces can further reduce entry points. In most cases, consistent cleaning, moisture control, and prevention measures are enough to significantly reduce or eliminate silverfish from the home over time.
