Before describing what happened next, it helps to understand our family. Lily is our adopted daughter. Five years ago, after my close friend Elena passed away in a tragic accident, my husband and I adopted her baby and promised to give her a stable and loving home. Our house had always felt peaceful, so the thought that something unusual might be happening under our own roof felt unsettling. When I finally opened the attic hatch that night, the explanation appeared almost immediately. In the corner of the attic sat an elderly woman who had been staying there secretly. She looked exhausted and frightened. I called the police, and officers arrived quickly to speak with her. During their conversation, they learned that the woman had been experiencing homelessness and had encountered Lily outside earlier in the week. According to the officers, she had gained the child’s trust and taught her a few phrases in Icelandic, telling Lily they might help her “communicate with her mother.” She had also asked Lily not to tell anyone.
The situation ended safely, but the experience left a lasting impression on our family. The officers explained that children sometimes keep concerns or confusing encounters to themselves because they fear adults won’t understand. After everything settled, my husband and I sat down with Lily and talked openly about her adoption and about always sharing questions or worries with us. What began as a strange moment in the middle of the night ultimately became a powerful reminder: trust and honest conversation are some of the most important things a family can build together.
