The One Pre-Vacation Home Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

Posted on February 28, 2026 By admin

Before heading out of town, most of us follow the familiar departure routine: adjust the thermostat, toss expired food, water the plants, and check the locks twice. It feels thorough and responsible. Yet there’s one small household detail that often slips through the cracks—and you won’t notice it until you return. After days or weeks away, a forgotten part of your plumbing system can create unpleasant odors that greet you at the door, quickly disrupting that relaxed, post-vacation glow.

The culprit is usually hiding in plain sight beneath your sink. The curved pipe known as the P-trap is designed to hold a small amount of water at all times. That water acts as a natural seal, blocking sewer gases and even tiny pests from traveling back up through your drains. When you’re home and using your sinks regularly, fresh water constantly refills that curve without you ever giving it a thought. But during extended absences, the standing water can gradually evaporate. Once that barrier disappears, odors can quietly make their way into your home.

The good news? A simple preventive step can save you from this unwelcome surprise. Before leaving, place a paper towel loosely over each drain and set an upside-down glass on top to keep it in place. This creates a light, breathable cover that helps limit airflow from the pipe while discouraging insects from entering. Unlike some drain plugs that may shift or loosen over time, this easy setup uses items you likely already have on hand and takes less than a minute per sink.

For an extra layer of freshness, give your sinks a quick refresh before covering them. Run hot water down the drain, add a small splash of vinegar to help break down residue, and wipe the basin dry. Then apply the paper towel and glass trick. It’s a tiny effort with an outsized payoff. Sometimes, the most overlooked steps are the ones that make coming home feel just as comforting as leaving.
