The Day the Woods Chose Me

Posted on February 3, 2026 By admin No Comments on The Day the Woods Chose Me

What unsettled me most wasn’t fear—it was the absence of it. Two deer emerged from the tree line while I was spreading hay, calm and deliberate. They didn’t spook or run. They simply watched. The larger one lingered behind, but the smaller held my gaze with an intensity that felt deliberate, almost knowing. I laughed it off, snapped a photo, and shared it online as a harmless moment. At the time, I had no idea it was anything but ordinary.

Then the smaller deer stepped closer to the fence and dropped something at my feet. Wrapped in dark cloth was a small wooden box, worn smooth with age. Inside lay a heavy silver locket etched with unfamiliar symbols that made my skin prickle the longer I looked at them. When I glanced up, the deer was already retreating into the forest, pausing once as if inviting me to follow. Against every instinct, I did.

The woods changed as I went deeper. Sound vanished—no birds, no wind, just a thick, unnatural quiet. The deer led me to a clearing dominated by a massive oak with blackened branches stretching skyward. Then, without warning, it was gone. At the base of the tree, the earth had been disturbed. Beneath the soil, I uncovered a stone tablet marked with the same symbols, and below that, an old parchment bearing a message meant for no one—and somehow, for me.

I haven’t slept well since. Research led me to fragments of an old legend about a hidden order guarding something called The Veil. The locket, according to those whispers, is a key. The deer, messengers. I don’t know why I was chosen or what waits beyond the next sign—but I know this wasn’t coincidence. Something ancient has reached out, and now that it has my attention, there’s no pretending this was ever just a walk near the woods.
